INDEX

[50340] (see note under William, assigned here as a son, although it is not proven)

[50343] CP: "Ralph Paynel, sheriff of Yorkshire in 1088 and the refounder of Holy Trinity Priory, York, was a tenant in chief at the Domesday survey in the counties of York, Lincoln, Northampton, Gloucester, Devon and Somerset, holding nearly the whole
estate of Merlesuen, who had been sheriff of co. Lincoln in 1066. He was probably the son of William Paynel, who appears to have possessed Les Moutiers-Hubert in Normandy, and to have been given lands in the Cotentin by King William I in
marriage as a tenancy of the Abbot of Le Mont St. Michel. To this gift was possibly added Hambye, where William son of Ralph Paynel by his first wife and his descendants, the Paynels of Hambye, held a tenancy in chief which continued in the
male line until the 15th century.

[50344]

[50345]

[50346]

[50347] On the death in 1230 of Maurice de Gant, grandson of Robert de Gant and Alice Paynel, Irnham and East Quantockshead and the remainder of his Paynel inheritance passed to his distant cousin Andrew Luterel, who was descended from Ralph Paynel the
Domesday tenant by his second wife Maud, presumed to be a daughter and coheir of Richard de Surdeval. Andrew Luterel had previously inherited the estates held by Ralph Paynel in right of his second wife, which included Hooton Pagnell and other
lands in West Riding Yorks. These, which had been held by William Paynel of Hooton, grandson of Ralph by his second wife, passed to Geoffrey Luterel, Andrew's father, by marriage with Frethesant, daughter and eventually sole heir of William
Paynel. Irnham, East Quantockshead and Hooton Pagnell thus descended in the Luterel family.

[41950] (see notes under brother William and under John Sutton d. 23 Nov 1359)

[41951]

[41952] CP: "The Paynels of Dudley were descended from Fulk Paynel, who was the successor of William son of Ansculf, the Domesday tenant of lands in several counties, which included Dudley, co. Worcester, and Newport [Pagnell], co. Buckingham. It is
probable that Fulk acquired these lands by marriage with William's daughter, and not unlikely that he was a younger brother of Ralph Paynel mentioned above, the two families being closely connected. "

[50519] (it is not proven that this William was a son of William. He is assigned here only because of the CP entry below)

[50520]

[50521] The Paynels of Bampton, Devon, were almost certainly a younger branch of the Paynels of Dudley. They were descended from William Paynel who acquired the honor of Bampton by marriage with Juliane, daughter of Robert de Bampton, son of Walter or
Walcelin de Douai, by his wife Emma. The inheritance eventually passed to John de Cogan.

[50522]

[50523] It is not possible to prove the descent from any of these families of William Paynel and his younger brother John, summoned to Parl. respectively in the years 1304 and 1299; but the heraldic evidence given below furnishes strong presumption of
their descent from a younger branch of the Paynels of Hambye. Other evidence will show that with their elder brother Thomas they were sons of a certain William Paynel and his wife Maud Husee. A Thomas Paynel occurs as a younger son of William
Paynel the founder of Hambye; and another Thomas Paynel, probably a son of Fulk Paynel I of Hambye, was living in the early years of the 13th century. In 1207 and 1212 John granted lands in Jersey to Thomas Paynel, Enjuger de Bohun in the
latter year pledging his own body for Thomas' loyalty, and undertaking that Thomas would ask for no other lands until the King should recover possession of Normandy. This Thomas was closely associated with Hasculf Paynel (a prebendary of York,
and brother of Fulk Paynel II of Hambye), who also had interests in Jersey. The christian name Thomas may suggest that one of these was the ancestor of Thomas son of William Paynel mentioned above, but no record evidence is available to prove
it, and the parentage of William Paynel, named next below, must remain undetermined.
